Kodo - Warabe

Salle Wilfrid-Pelletier March 13, 2025

An epic journey to Japan with the group KODO. The long-awaited follow-up to Tsuzumi is finally coming to Montreal in 2025!

A pulsing percussion performance, worthy of the Japanese term “Kodo,” which can literally be translated as “heartbeat.” This new work, titled “Warabe,” looks to the troupe’s classic repertoire, inspired by Japanese stories. The opening number is, in fact, a nod to an art form called Shishi, or deer dance, in the purest Japanese tradition. A simple blend of the multiple sounds, expressions, and vibrations of the taiko drums, evoking a wide range of emotions in audiences. Unique sounds and resonances that are said to vibrate right through to a person’s soul.

Reviews

“Indeed, if there is such a thing as perfection in music, Kodo comes as near to it as any group in the world.”

– Boston Globe

“Superlatives don’t really exist to convey the primal power and bravura beauty of Kodo.”

– Chicago Tribune

“Dynamic, electrifying vision… Nothing will prepare you for the 1,000 lb. drum assault, the precise timing or the wall of sound. An essential experience.”

– Time Out (United Kingdom)
